Brief: A young progressive couple sought from me a conceptual design for their Seattle Washington home. They wanted a sustainable approach, with low water use and maintenance, as well as clean geometries and order. The couple also had an interest in organic farming, so space was dedicated for “crop rows” of vegetables. A fence was needed for privacy and security, but the couple didn’t want to completely seclude themselves from neighbors, so a redwood fence was designed with transparent resin 3-form panels to give off colored light to passerbys. The extreme grade of the backyard was delineated into tiered planter areas, all leading to a raised redwood platform that yields views to Pugent Sound. A raised platform of the the same material jags and leads you through a “forest” of bamboo and grasses, with a surprise artifact display from the couple’s travels. The platform leads to the backyard, designed with a patterned ground plane composed of DG, hazelnut shells, and rock.
Role: Met directly with clients to discuss goals. All design work and graphics.
